The purpose of the online event is to create a meeting platform for various documentation and archiving actors in Tamil society. We would like to create a platform to share information, knowledge and awareness about documentation and preservation. On this virtual event, DsporA would like to encourage all Diaspora Tamil organisations to establish a “records manager” in every Tamil organisation and anchor documentation and preservation procedures and culture in the management of your organisation. Administrative records of our present activities are future historical archives of a society and a nation. This is only possible by your archival materials.

In February 2021, DsporA Tamil Archive organised its first public online meeting about archives and preservation. The meeting was conducted in Norwegian for Tamil organisations in Norway. Six Norwegian preservation institutions participated and contributed four speeches to inform archive and preservation procedures and routines in Norway.

In its continuation, DsporA Tamil Archive is humble to announce its second online archives awareness and information event to mark International Archives Day. The two days event will be held on Saturday 12th June and Sunday 13th June at 06:00 – 08:00 pm European time. This event will be conducted in Tamil. The audience entry will open at 05:50 pm with a showcase of Tamils´ documenting and archiving activities.

We are humble and thankful to all the contributors and facilitators for organising this online event. Tamil Youth Organisation, Norway (TYO Norway) is giving us technical support on both days. Two Diaspora Tamil individuals and four Diaspora Tamil documentation and archiving organisations are contributing speeches on various topics to raise awareness in the subject. We are happy to include another contributing organisation at the event on Sunday.

The topics covered are the role of the archive, library and museum in Tamil society, access to Tamil archives for knowledge and rights, the journey of a Tamil physical archive, copyright and source criticism and documenting, preserving the history of exile Tamil families, and the need of virtual repositories for Tamils. There will be a question time at the end of both days.
