Patriots Day of Tamil Eelam

19th April is the Patriots Day of Tamil Eelam; தமிழீழ நாட்டுப்பற்றாளர் நாள். The day of the sacrifice of Annai Poopathi (Mother Poopathi) was chosen to dedicate and commemorate all patriots of Tamil Eelam.

Annai Poopathi (pūpati kaṇapatippiḷḷai; பூபதி கணபதிப்பிள்ளை) was a housewife, mother and a member of the Women’s Front. Her qualities, personality and the killing of her son by the Sri Lankan armed forces made her a peace activist. On 19th March 1988, she took the hunger strike as non-violent resistance to the oppression of the Tamil and Muslim people and the violation of human rights during the occupation of the north and east by the Indian army. On 19th April 1988, she sacrificed her life on her hunger strike.

On this day DiasporA Tamil Archives commemorate all patriots of Tamil Eelam. That includes Patriot Philominamma George (நாட்டுப்பற்றாளர் பிலோமினம்மா ஜோர்ஜ்) who migrated to Norway in 1987 and died in Tsunami in December 2004 in Tamil Eelam. She was honoured as a “Patriot”; “நாட்டுப்பற்றாளர்” for her service as Tamil teacher for the Tamil people in Norway and in Tamil Eelam.
